Okuda San Miguel celebrates the Chinese New Year of the Dragon

The year of the Dragon 2024 begins on 10 February, the date on which the change of cycle is celebrated according to Chinese tradition, which for them is the beginning of the year 4722. This animal of the Chinese horoscope represents power, nobility and good fortune.

To celebrate, El Corte Inglés has chosen the work of Okuda San Miguel who reinterprets the figure of the Dragon and other works of art. The large canvas in Castellana, which shows the figure of this dragon, is the prelude to what can be seen inside the centre. The most spectacular of the works he has created for this occasion is a majestic piece of dragon that will be on display in El Corte Inglés de Castellana, in Madrid.

The figure, which is perched on the central column of the Atrium of Luxury, is made on a metal and wooden structure, made of cold-treated resin. The spectacular piece is around ten metres high. The Chinese Dragon is associated with strength, health, harmony and good luck. It is the only mythological creature in the Chinese zodiac and is traditionally always placed in high places to ward off demons and evil spirits.

Okuda San Miguel will also be exhibiting a sculpture of a Soulkeeper sitting at the piano in the central area of the same atrium, and several dragon heads arranged in display cases in the VIP Lounge space of the mall, as well as various graphic works. In addition, the artist has designed vinyls with some of his works to be exhibited in spaces in El Corte Inglés de Diagonal, in Barcelona, also to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Okuda San Miguel, known for his surrealist pop style full of geometric structures and vibrant colours, brings his own design and reinterpretation of the Chinese zodiac Dragon to the holiday. His internationally recognised creativity has become a vehicle for projecting Spain’s cultural heritage in an updated and innovative way.

The company has chosen this renowned Spanish artist mainly for his international career and especially for his most important projects carried out in China. His large-scale sculptures in cities such as Shenzhen, Beijing and Zhengzhou, as well as his exhibitions in Guangzhou, Shenyang, Shanghai and Wuhan, have always stood out for their enormous connection with and understanding of local aesthetics.

The artist’s work carries the values of Spain all over the world. His futuristic interpretation of cultural heritage, expressed through his art, has become a recognisable symbol anywhere on the planet. El Corte Inglés, which once again joins in this festivity, will concentrate a large number of initiatives, promotions and special gifts, in collaboration with regular partners, which will be aimed at customers of Chinese nationality.

Okuda San Miguel and Vilebrequin have joined forces to create a new collection that blurs the boundaries between fashion and art.
