Ottolinger has been practical this season, giving life to a set of pieces that somehow reflect the path that is taking the current fashion, where functionality is above all. And although minimalism is not something very typical of the brand, it does synthesize the needs of everyday life.
Life in Berlin is never far from the imagination of the Ottolinger girls, and weekend club adventures were back on the agenda. The designers build on their usual repertoire of crisscrossed garments; this controlled “deconstruction” evolves this season with peel-aways based on viscoelastic scuba foam – looks 36, 37 and 38. Office ensembles are revamped for both genders. Elsewhere, llama, dog or cat prints are added to dresses, skirts, mesh tops and even handbags.
When Cosima and Christa started Ottolinger, they started with womenswear only, however as the years have passed and the brand has become more relevant internationally, the designers have seen the importance of having a masculine alternative in their discourse. The intention seems to be to create a real closet that serves everyone, connected to the functionality and versatility that life requires, in this case, in Berlin, which is what they envision.
As the Berlin Fashion Week-which is just happening these days – grows and poses as a potential competitor to the Big Four of fashion, New York, London, Milan and Paris, Ottolinger celebrates the Berlin lifestyle almost as if the photos of the collection were pamphlets of tourist attraction of the German capital.
