Prada Turns Basketball into a Luxury Object

Prada launches a basketball as a collector’s item, reinforcing its approach to sport through the lens of luxury and aesthetics.

Prada Turns Basketball into a Luxury Object

The black Prada basketball is held in place by a nylon harness and detailed with white lines and the brand’s iconic triangle logo stamped at the centre. Described by the house as a collector’s item, it is clear that this piece is not intended for actual use on the court.

Priced at $975, the basketball forms part of a series of products that reinterpret sports elements as luxury objects. The collection expands with necklaces, bracelets and earrings that miniaturise the basketball, placing it in the realm of jewellery. These pieces sit just below the price of the full-size ball, further emphasising its symbolic value over any functional purpose.

This is not Prada’s first foray into the world of sport. The brand has previously released tennis balls, footballs, and even a bocce set priced at over $2,000.

Far from performance logic, Prada’s objects —like its new basketball— are conceived to exist in a different space: one defined by consumption, aesthetics, and collectability.
