After the phosphorescent pink blast of their first single, TODO ROSA, the quartet consisting of Javier Calvo, Marco Frías, Alex de Lucas, and Elena Rodríguez presents their debut EP: ¡¿QUÉ PASA?! ¡¿NOBODY WANTS TO BE A MAN ANYMORE?! A title that could be a campaign slogan or the headline of a collective emotional breakdown—one of those that hits you at five in the morning with glitter on your face and unread WhatsApp messages.
These are four songs that continue the glorious and degenerate trail of Iberian punk-pop, from Parálisis Permanente to La Élite, via Meteosat, Kaká de Luxe, and that mutant generation that grew up among fan forums, speed, and after-dinner trash culture. But this isn’t a revival: this is an existential glitter bomb, written with smudged mascara and screams from Andrés Borrego Street.
¡¿QUÉ PASA?! ¡¿YA NADIE QUIERE SER UN HOMBRE?!
TODO ROSA is a postmodern anthem that invokes Rosa Benito, Ana Rosa, Rosa Valenty, and Rosa de España herself as saints on a surreal, chemical altar. The music video is a pop fantasy with an emotional LSD aroma.
WANANI (37 MARICONES) takes a real news story—gay sauna raids—and transforms it into a queer chronicle, a Russian choir, and a cathartic ritual. Nazario would be proud. If you scream your friend’s name like the world is ending, this song is for you. And yes, it’s the Madrid Gay Men’s Choir.
HETERO FARLOPERO is a sharp portrait of the authentic macho man with a double life and a triple line. A song that smells of a bar restroom, Madrid’s early mornings, and spoiled soccer players. It includes ska, screams, and an exact address: Calle del Chin Chin.
And just when you think everything’s ha ha ha, I DON’T WANNA DIE arrives. The ballad, the comedown, the exact moment between euphoria and emptiness. Directed by Pablo Amores (yes, the same one behind María Escarmiento, Marcelo Criminal, and Shangay Baby), the music video isn’t a metaphor: it’s an open wound in the form of a slow beat.
To close, Raya Diplomática dons some deluxe references: Ana Belén + Kaká de Luxe + Pegamoides in a double version that is an emotional archaeology of Spanish pop. Between “Muy cerca de ti” and “Vértigo,” they reconstruct a queer, romantic, outsider musical DNA.
¡¿QUÉ PASA?! ¡¿YA NADIE QUIERE SER UN HOMBRE?! is now available on all platforms. But don’t say we didn’t warn you: this isn’t an EP, it’s a broken mirror with four reflections staring back at you.
