Paramount Pictures has just unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming animated Smurfs movie, and the return to the endearing blue world promises to be epic. In this new adventure, Rihanna lends her iconic voice to Smurfette. But not only that: the singer transforms Belinda Carlisle’s classic ‘Heaven Is a Place on Earth’ into an exclusive version, which promises to add even more magic to this eagerly awaited release.
The trailer opens with Rihanna introducing the film, before taking us straight into the heart of Smurf Village. There, her character declares herself ‘the coolest Smurf in the whole village’, as the Smurfs break out in a lively party to the beat of her hit song Don’t Stop the Music. But the fun is interrupted when Papa Smurf is mysteriously kidnapped, forcing our blue heroes to embark on an epic adventure into the human world to save him.
Rihanna doesn’t just voice Smurfette: she also serves as producer and composer of original songs for the soundtrack. And, with her trademark humour, she joked at CinemaCon 2023: ‘I tried to get the role of Papa Smurf, but it didn’t work out’.
The film, directed by Chris Miller and Matt Landon, has an all-star cast to accompany Rihanna, with names like John Goodman, Natasha Lyonne, Nick Offerman, Octavia Spencer, Sandra Oh, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll and Kurt Russell promising to add even more stars to this blue universe.
