Robert Pattinson has once again proved that behind the enigmatic aura that has followed him for over a decade, there is someone just as human as the rest of us. In a conversation with Zendaya for Interview Magazine, the British actor recalled a particularly awkward moment in therapy: his psychologist asked whether he was under the influence of something because he couldn’t quite understand what Pattinson was saying. Pattinson’s response was as simple as it was honest — he was “doing [his] best”. And yes, the situation sounds as absurd as it does endearing.

Beyond the anecdote, the actor reflected on something that has followed him ever since he rose to fame with Twilight: the persistent feeling of being misunderstood. When you become famous for playing a character as iconic as Edward Cullen, the line between fiction and reality can easily blur for audiences. Pattinson explained that, for a long time, many people assumed he was exactly like the vampire he portrayed. Interestingly, rather than being overly bothered by it, he learned to use that perception to his advantage, weaving public expectations into his performances.

That enigmatic image also shaped his first encounter with Zendaya. The actress admitted that she initially saw him as quiet and reserved — almost mysterious. However, Tom Holland — a mutual friend — insisted that Pattinson was actually the opposite: playful, constantly laughing and always ready with a joke. Robert himself acknowledged, with a smile, that he sometimes wishes he could maintain that imposing silence that makes people think he’s intimidating, but he simply can’t keep it up for long.

As if further proof were needed of his charming awkwardness, Pattinson also confessed that he was invited to a screening of an episode of Euphoria but ended up missing it. He still joined the discussion afterwards as though he had seen it, until strategic silence became his only option. It’s a moment that neatly captures his blend of accidental humour and vulnerability.

Now, Pattinson and Zendaya share the screen in The Drama, A24’s latest film directed by Kristoffer Borgli. The story follows an engaged couple whose wedding week is thrown off course by an unexpected event, exploring their personal and cultural differences. Set for release in the United States on 3 April 2026, the film promises to reveal a new side of both actors. If this interview makes anything clear, it’s that beyond the mystique and the fame, Pattinson is simply someone — like the rest of us — trying to be understood.
