Sabrina Carpenter responds to criticism of her wardrobe in shows

Sabrina Carpenter is at the centre of a firestorm of backlash for her bold exploration of sexuality in her music, a path taken by pop legends such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. In a recent interview with TIME, Carpenter holds nothing back, noting how these iconic figures have faced backlash for their creative freedom. ‘Yeah, I definitely understand that struggle,’ the artist confesses.

But Sabrina doesn’t stop there. She stresses that while her predecessors have opened doors, there are still those who feel threatened by their expression. ‘There will always be that occasional mother who has strong opinions about your wardrobe,’ she says with a touch of irony. ‘To those people I would say: don’t come to the show and everything will be fine.’

Dress, for Carpenter, is not just an aesthetic choice, but an essential tool for her performance. ‘It’s a shame to be criticised for what you wear. Getting on stage in front of a crowd is terrifying,’ he admits. ‘If the only thing that empowers you to do it is to feel comfortable in your outfit, then that’s what matters. Authenticity is key.

Moreover, the pressure of social media is no stranger to her. ‘I realised that when I feel attacked, I’m the only one who sees all that negativity. My friends don’t notice,’ she reveals, reflecting the loneliness that can accompany fame. The artist knows that every criticism can be a double-edged sword.

Last month Carpenter stunned everyone by alluding to speculation about her involvement in the indictment of New York Mayor Eric Adams following the release of her provocative video ‘Feather’. ‘Diba, what now?’ she blurted out during her electrifying performance at Madison Square Garden. ‘Should we talk about how I got the mayor indicted, or…?’.

The pop superstar is pleased to welcome her Cherry Era through the launch of her latest perfume.
