Known for her signature cosmopolitan princess style, Sandy Liang’s latest SS24 collection presented at NYFW was a fusion of nostalgia, fantasy and modernity.
Sandy Liang’s SS24 collection entitled “The Virgin Suicides” is a tribute to the film directed by Sofia Coppola. The collection is inspired by the Lisbon sisters and their looks set in 1970s America. Ethereal taffeta dresses, low-waisted pleated skirts, ballerinas, bows, sandals and navy details were the key points of the show.
The iconic vintage lace dress of one of the sisters in the film, Cecilia, paired with daddy sandals was a clear inspiration for Sandy Liang. Mermaidcore shone through with accessories inspired by the marine world, while the Y2K aesthetic was present through graphic tees and sexy miniskirts seen in previous seasons.
In this collection, pleated skirts and bows emerged as the defining elements. Liang reimagined pleated skirts with a real corporate touch, juxtaposing jackets with mini, sheer and low-waisted skirts. Bows also took over XXL shoulder bags, a key element of the branded aesthetic for these new seasons.
Sandy Liang’s recent collaboration with Baggu sold out within moments of its launch. This success, along with the popularity of her ballet shoes and Salomon, has positioned Sandy Liang in the upper echelons of the fashion industry. Her aesthetic, often worthy of memes, has become firmly established in contemporary fashion culture.
