Renowned British designer Sarah Burton has been officially appointed as the new creative director of Givenchy, the iconic fashion house owned by LVMH. Burton, known for her distinguished career at Alexander McQueen, where she spent her entire career, becomes only the second woman to lead Givenchy’s creative direction. Burton’s debut at the maison is expected for Paris Fashion Week in March 2025, where she will present her first collection for Givenchy. Before that, Burton will be introduced this week to the Avenue George V ateliers.
Sidney Toledano, president of Givenchy, said: ‘Sarah Burton is an exceptional creative talent whose work I have followed passionately for many years. I am delighted that she is joining Givenchy today. Her unique vision and approach to fashion will be invaluable to this iconic house, known for its audacity and haute couture. I am convinced that his creative leadership will contribute to the maison’s future success and international position.
Burton said: ‘It is a great honour to join the beautiful house of Givenchy, it is a jewel. I am thrilled to be able to write the next chapter in the history of this iconic house and to bring my own vision, sensibility and beliefs to Givenchy’. At Givenchy, Burton will design both the women’s and men’s collections, with her first women’s collection debuting next March.
Sarah Burton comes to Givenchy having established her name as one of the great talents of contemporary fashion. Following in the footsteps of the legendary Lee Alexander McQueen, Burton has earned global acclaim as one of the most influential designers of her generation. His final collection for Alexander McQueen, presented for the spring 2024 season in October 2023, marked the close of an era at the London-based house of Kering.
At Givenchy, Burton succeeds Matthew M. Williams and joins the illustrious list of designers who have made their mark at the maison, including names such as John Galliano and Riccardo Tisci, the latter known for his successful 12-year tenure. With her talent and vision, Sarah Burton is poised to continue her remarkable career and lead Givenchy into a new chapter full of boldness and creativity.
