Saudi Arabia plans to build a football stadium on top of a skyscraper

The NEOM Sky Stadium will be located at a height of 350 metres.

As part of its impressive plan for the 2034 World Cup, Saudi Arabia has leaked one of the most ambitious – and surreal – projects in the history of sport. The NEOM Sky Stadium will be suspended in the sky, atop a 350-metre skyscraper, and promises a capacity for 46,000 people, 100% renewable energy thanks to solar and wind power systems, and a leading role in the competition.

Construction is scheduled for 2026–2027, with an opening planned for 2032. Just in time to host the first World Cup with 48 teams.

This project is just one part of the NEOM megaproject, the Saudi kingdom’s new futuristic city in the middle of the desert, financed by private capital and designed to become the new Europe. We are talking about $1.5 trillion earmarked to transform the country’s economy and revamp its global image into a symbol of sustainability, innovation and luxury tourism.
