Several parents at a Florida school have complained that Michelangelo’s masterpiece is “pornographic,” and the principal has been forced to resign.
Last week, a principal had to permanently leave her school in Florida after several complaints from parents for showing Michelangelo’s David in art class. According to them, it is a controversial work unsuitable for the age of the students, who are between 11 and 12 years old.
Hope Carrasquilla, the principal, was forced out of her position at Tallahassee Classical after being given a choice between resigning or being fired at a school board meeting. “Every once in a while you have a parent who gets angry about Renaissance art,” she commented to the press.
The school was required by policy to send parents a warning letter stating that their children would see this type of artwork, and this year because of “communication errors,” they did not receive the letter and complained. Other works presented by the director during the lesson were the Creation of Adam and the Birth of Venus.
The mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, has publicly invited both Hope Carrasquilla and the parents and students to visit the work in Italy. Cecilie Hollberg, director of the Galleria dell’Accademia, commented in an interview, “To think that the David can be pornographic really means not understanding the content of the Bible, not understanding Western culture and not understanding Renaissance art.”
In other news, Scorsese’s new project with DiCaprio and De Niro already has a release date.
