Shanghai Baby returns with the hypnotic single ‘Im Not Gonna Dance’

After leaving us fascinated with her last EP EP02 in May 2024, Shanghai Baby surprises us again with her new single I’m Not Gonna Dance. Ade Martin, the former Hinds bassist, returns with that sound of hers that has already won us over, but now she takes it a step further. The song envelops you little by little, trapping you in a hypnotic mantra that repeats itself over and over again, while sounds that never cease to evolve submerge you in its sonic universe, leaving you with no way out.

‘I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a long time. I love those songs that grab you slowly, that grow through repetition, and that seem like they can’t go any further, but surprise you. I’m Not Gonna Dance has two meanings for me. The first is the most obvious: I’m not one of those people who enjoy dancing, I prefer the bar to the dance floor. But the other meaning has to do with how, when someone provokes you or seeks you out, saying ‘I’m not going to dance’ can be a way of making it clear that you’re not going to play their game. I’m calm, I’m not going to play along. That’s the essence of the song’, Ade tells us about this new single.

We know Ade from his time in Hinds, the band that put Madrid garage on the map and toured half the world. In 2022, he decided to embark on a solo career and, together with drummer Nico Yubero of La Paloma and producer Paco Loco, Shanghai Baby was born. A project that stands out not only for its sound, but also for its aesthetics, something very difficult to find on the national scene.

I’m Not Gonna Dance is the journey proposed by Ade and Paco Loco. A sonic journey reminiscent of the sounds of LCD Soundsystem, The Velvet Underground or La Femme. A more polished and refined sound than their previous works, but without losing that essence that transports us more to New York than to Madrid. Since their last EP EP02, we have seen Ade transform not only their sound, but also their image, under the guidance of Fede Maniá, audiovisual director of the latest projects by La Élite, La Paloma, Teo Planell and Juanjo Bona.

Shanghai Baby’s new single is an invitation to discover Ade Martín’s most passionate and personal universe.
