Solid fragrances are here to stay

In the beauty industry’s constant quest for innovation and sustainability, brands are embracing a future that moves away from the excesses of the past. Instead of dazzling with ornate bottles and overloaded compositions, the present and future of perfumery is focused on simplicity, functionality and, above all, sustainability. In this context, solid fragrances have emerged as a disruptive alternative that promises to transform our experience of perfume.

Solid fragrances are the manifestation of the shift in how we experience beauty. With a stronger concentration, a greener proposition and unparalleled portability, these fragrances represent a true innovation within the industry. Brands such as Glossier and Diptyque are already at the forefront of this trend, embracing what has been termed the ‘skinification’ of perfume, where it is not just a fragrance, but a gesture that adapts to the body, moisturises, cares and accompanies.

What are the benefits?

Carrying a liquid fragrance during travel has always been a challenge. Size, fragility and airport restrictions make perfume one of those products that, while beloved, rarely accompany travellers in comfort. However, solid perfumes have arrived to break that barrier. As Yvan Jacqueline, President of Parfums de Marly, points out, ‘solid perfumes are ideal for those seeking practicality without sacrificing scent intensity’. Not only are these products adapted to modern life, but they offer superior concentration due to their alcohol-free formulation, which makes them much more long-lasting.

Jérôme Epinette, a renowned perfumer known for his work with brands such as Byredo and Atelier Cologne, stresses that ‘the application of solid fragrances is a more intimate experience, closer to the skin’. Portability and sustainability go hand in hand in this format, allowing consumers to carry a high-quality fragrance with them without creating a negative environmental impact.

Solid fragrances are not only limited to perfuming, but also bring a direct benefit to the skin. By incorporating moisturising and nourishing ingredients, such as essential oils and waxes, these perfumes become a sensory ritual that goes beyond scent. By fusing fragrance with cosmetic properties, solid perfumes are positioned as an integral option for those seeking a multifunctional product. Epinette adds that ‘this duality allows the perfume not only to leave a captivating scent, but also to care for the skin, protecting and moisturising it’.

Solid perfumes are also a direct response to the need to reduce environmental impact. By eliminating the use of alcohol and reducing the volume of packaging, these perfumes have a much smaller carbon footprint. ‘The solid format reduces packaging, which contributes to a smaller ecological footprint,’ Epinette stresses. This trend is in line with global efforts for more responsible and conscious consumption. Brands such as Parfums de Marly have already taken the initiative to work with responsible ingredients and eco-friendly packaging, helping to preserve natural resources and reduce their environmental impact.

As consumer preferences evolve, the fragrance industry faces a future full of creativity and innovation. ‘We will continue to see solid fragrances diversify and refine, from blockbusters to new offerings,’ says Jacqueline. Perfumery, in its new solid form, not only meets the demands of convenience and sustainability, but also offers new ways to enjoy scent, with creations that are increasingly sophisticated and adapted to diverse lifestyles.
