You’ve probably been aware that this Sunday was the 95th Academy Awards, and if you didn’t know Ruth Carter yet, we tell you about the iconic designer.

At this year’s Oscars, Carter received the award for Best Costume Design for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She was competing for the statuette against Babylon, Everything Everywhere At Once, Elvis and Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris. Although it was a close category, the designer was the winner for her 2,000 costumes made for the actors and extras in the Marvel blockbuster.

Carter has paid homage to black culture throughout her career, with a keen ability to capture popular American street styles. She landed her first job as a costume designer in 1988 for the film School Daze directed by the legendary Spike Lee. Since then, she has demonstrated her talent and relentless ability to portray her vision of black American life at different points in time through fashion.

With these two well-deserved Oscars, he is being recognized for his work over the past 30 years, leaving us gems such as his work in Do the Right Thing (1989), What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993), B*A*P*S (1997), Black Panther (2018) and the recent Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).
