Stella McCartney buys LVMH stake and redefines sustainable luxury

Luxury reinvents itself: Stella McCartney has just completed a strategic move that marks her complete independence. The designer has officially acquired a minority stake in LVMH, bringing to a close a period of more than five years of collaboration. But it’s not goodbye: McCartney remains connected to the luxury giant, but in a new role that positions her as a global ambassador for sustainability.

According to LVMH’s official statement, this divestment is not a definitive farewell, but a natural evolution. After a partnership that strengthened the foundations of the brand and its governance, McCartney is embarking on writing her own story, always in line with her values. LVMH reaffirms that the designer will continue to advise the group on key sustainability issues, taking her vision beyond the catwalks.

The agreement with LVMH, signed in 2019, was a milestone. Bernard Arnault was ‘extremely happy’ with the partnership, attracted by McCartney’s sustainable vision. What LVMH gave the designer was room to grow without losing control, something she had not achieved in her previous deal with Kering. Over the years, Stella has spearheaded several disruptive initiatives, such as her collaboration with Veuve Clicquot, which transformed grape waste into luxury accessories.

On her latest Spring 2024 catwalk, Stella McCartney once again revolutionised the concept of sustainability with her bags made from recycled grape waste, a clear example of how luxury can be the engine of change. The material, created in record time (less than 18 months), is a jewel of eco-innovation, significantly reducing CO2 emissions compared to traditional leather processes.

With this move, Stella McCartney not only reaffirms its place in the industry, but demonstrates that the future of luxury is in the hands of those who not only create, but also transform with a conscience. Sustainability is not just a hallmark for her: it is the new luxury.
