Sydney Sweeney confronts criticism about her body

Sydney Sweeney has decided not to keep quiet in the face of haters’ attacks. The actress, known for her role in Euphoria, has just made it clear on Instagram: comments about her body are not going to bring her down. Last Saturday, she shared a video that begins with a compilation of cruel posts about her figure. From nicknames like ‘mana face’ to criticisms of her ‘lack of shape’, Sweeney has not been spared from digital violence.

But instead of giving up, she has opted for the most powerful response: action. The second part of the video shows her training hard. Tyres, sit-ups, boxing… all with the same intensity with which she faces criticism. The video culminates with the actress flexing in front of the mirror, making it clear that her effort is paying off.

This training is not just on a whim. Sweeney is preparing to play boxing legend Christy Martin in a film directed by David Michôd. In October, the actress shared her excitement about the role, noting the strength and resilience of the woman she is playing. ‘It is an honour to bring to life a champion who fought battles in and out of the ring,’ she wrote, making it clear that her physical preparation goes beyond a movie role.

Sweeney has dealt with comments about her appearance for years, and has been outspoken about the impact they have. In 2021, the actress addressed her haters after trending on Twitter for ‘being ugly’. ‘I know people say I shouldn’t read the comments, but I’m human,’ she said at the time. ‘It’s important for people to see how words really affect.’

But it’s not just trolls who get theirs. Earlier this year, Sweeney also criticised the industry for the lack of support among women. After receiving disparaging comments from producer Carol Baum, the actress expressed her disappointment. ‘It’s disheartening to see women in the industry tearing down other women,’ she said. ‘And the whole ‘female empowerment’ thing… it’s not really happening.’

Sydney Sweeney isn’t just in the fight for a role. She’s in the fight for her own representation. Far from shutting up, she has turned criticism into fuel for her personal and professional growth. To the trolls, she responds forcefully. To the industry, she shows them what it is to be truly resilient.
