Sydney Sweeney leaves behind her glamorous roles and steps into the boxing ring. The actress stars in Christy, the biographical film about boxing legend Christy Martin, set to premiere in September 2025 at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Directed by David Michôd and co-written with Mirrah Foulkes, the film explores both Martin’s boxing career and her personal history marked by domestic violence. In addition to playing the lead role, Sweeney also produces the project through her company Fifty-Fifty Films. Christy Martin herself has been directly involved in the development.
Nicknamed “The Coal Miner’s Daughter”, Martin was a key figure in bringing visibility to women’s boxing. Her undercard fight ahead of a Mike Tyson bout in 1996 gained her mainstream media attention and established her as a prominent figure in the sport. She ended her career with a record of 49-7-3, including 31 knockouts.
Sweeney explained in an interview with W Magazine that her body changed significantly during physical preparation for the role. She went from wearing a size 23 to a 27 in jeans, and noticed a visible increase in her chest and lower body. She described it as a drastic change, but said she felt stronger than ever.
The film also addresses the attempted murder Martin survived at the hands of her then-husband and trainer, Jim Martin, who was later sentenced to 25 years in prison. Since then, she has been actively involved in campaigning against domestic violence and founded the non-profit organisation Christy’s Champs.
The script aims to balance the sporting narrative with the biographical and personal elements, without shying away from the most difficult parts of Martin’s story. Christy is already being positioned as one of the standout biopics of the upcoming awards season.
