From the Euphoria universe straight into the driver’s seat: Sydney Sweeney will star in Universal Pictures’ next project, a live-action adaptation of OutRun, the legendary arcade driving video game released by Sega in 1986.
The actress, who is constantly adding titles to her filmography and is positioning herself as one of the hottest names of the moment, will also take on the role of producer in this film directed by none other than Michael Bay. Explosions, speed and palm trees at sunset: the vibe is on.
The film will be produced by Bay and Brad Fuller under the Platinum Dunes label, while Sega puts Toru Nakahara at the helm of production and company president Shuji Utsumi as general supervisor of the project. The script is being written by Jayson Rothwell, although details are being kept under lock and key for now.
OutRun is not just a vintage game: it was an arcade revolution that laid the groundwork for the driving genre in video games, and became an aesthetic icon with its mix of speed, pastel landscapes and electronic music. The perfect mood for Sweeney to shine on screen.
With the runaway success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s, Universal is looking to repeat the winning move. And with Sydney at the wheel, it looks like OutRun could be the next pop obsession.
