The duo, who have already worked on several songs as guest artists on each other’s projects, are set to tour the US together starting in April, with a tour that promises to be one of the most anticipated of the year. In a recent appearance on the Sherri Show, SZA was asked about the possibility of a joint album with Kendrick, and her response was unequivocal: ‘I would love it. I would love it! I think that would be amazing. He’s a genius. The singer added, admiringly: ‘Part of his genius is how elusive and mysterious he is, and I love that. I don’t know what’s going on as much as you don’t know what’s going on’.
In another snippet of the interview, SZA delved into the creative process behind her most recent collaborations, ‘Gloria’ and ‘Luther’, part of her GNX project. On ‘Luther’, the singer revealed: ‘When it came out, I said, “Okay, those are the voices we’re using, full stop”. Same thing with ‘Gloria’, I said, ‘It’s fine, and I love it. He also expressed his deep admiration for Kendrick: ‘He’s a big part of my mistake and my era of searching because I completely trust his experience. He’s pushing me into those moments, into the spotlight, and telling me to say yes, and he’s so good at that, but without losing the ground beneath his feet. So I’m like, ‘Show me, sensei, what you know’’.
SZA and Kendrick Lamar’s Grand National Tour kicks off on 19 April in Minneapolis, and will tour several cities, culminating on 18 June in Washington. The tour will undoubtedly be a unique opportunity to enjoy the chemistry between these two music giants, who could be laying the groundwork for an even greater collaboration in the future.
