Exactly one month ago, TOMMY JEANS once again demonstrated that it knows the rules and codes of today’s streetwear, understanding the pulse between street and digital aesthetics, but without losing sight of its preppy heritage. And what better partner for this than Aleali May, one of the most influential voices in the industry?
HIGHXTAR. (H) – Your style is a global reference. How do you nurture your creativity? Who and what inspires you?
ALEALI MAY (AM) – My style represents who I am, where I come from and where I am going. As I get older, my style is constantly evolving. This is based on a growing interest, life experiences and always remembering who has supported me along the way. This ranges from my family, friends, fashion designers and pop culture: women in R&B and hip hop like Lil’ Kim, Missy Elliot, Aaliyah and many more!
(H) – When you don’t know what to wear… Who do you ask for advice?
(AM) – I FaceTime my friends when I don’t know what to wear. They are very stylish and always ask me the right questions, like where I’m going and what I’m going to do, which helps me narrow down my choices!
(H) – If you could steal someone’s wardrobe (or swap it)… Who would it be?
(AM) – If I could steal anyone’s wardrobe, it would be Rihanna’s. She’s a style icon! So many files, so many options for any occasion, whether it’s for the spotlight or going out to dinner.
(H) – A must-have in your wardrobe that never fails.
(AM) – An amazing pair of shoes!
(H) – How did this collaboration with Tommy come about?
(AM) – I have known Tommy for a long time and we have a lot in common. We are both totally committed to what we do and work from a perspective where optimism and creativity merge with unwavering determination. Tommy approached me to be a Guest Creative Consultant after seeing my recent work and feeling that I was the right person to infuse Tommy Girl with renewed energy. I brought my personal LA style to his East Coast preparation for this collection. I am very proud to be a part of creating the Tommy Girl legacy for today.
(H) -What is your first memory with the brand?
(AM) – For me, Tommy Girl has always been a movement, an attitude that defined the 90s generation. It fused fashion, music, art and lifestyle: all the good things that make life worth living. My first memory was seeing one of my favourite singers, Aaliyah, in Tommy Jeans. I saw her when I was seven years old and thought: “She looks like me!
(H) -What was your visual or conceptual starting point for designing the collection?
(AM) – Tommy and I knew we wanted to take Tommy Girl to the next generation, channeling that same fearless ’90s spirit that I’ve always loved, redesigned for the modern world. So, we reimagined the elements that made the style iconic – bright graphics, oversized denim and vibrant colours – and infused them with a fresh energy for a new era. It’s all about combining the classic Tommy style of sharp silhouettes and layered textures with a West Coast sense of freedom – Tommy Girl is back!
(H) – What elements of your personal style are most clearly reflected in this collaboration?
(AM) – For me, style is about fusing different influences to express who I really am. In the same way, Tommy Girl has never been just about a look, a person or a moment; it’s a reflection of every girl, every era and every way of being yourself without complexes.
(H) -Your favourite design from the collection for everyday use, and for a special occasion?
(AM) – The Star jeans and rugby shirt: simple, confident and cool. The rhinestone-trimmed dress gives me a lot of energy for its sporty-chic style. It’s perfect for a special occasion, whatever that means to you. Each garment is designed to feel authentic and natural, like you’re creating your own version of Tommy Girl.
(H) – Who would you like to see wearing one of these designs?
(AM) – Ultimately, I think anyone can be a Tommy Girl. Wear what you love, combine it with confidence and make it your own. Tommy Girl is designed for the everyday, so you can go out into the world with a little more confidence, knowing that a good outfit can help you start your day with energy.
