The 8 conglomerates that control the cosmetics industry

Beauty, before being a creative industry, is a multi-billion dollar business. It’s all driven by money from the buying and selling of companies and the growing portfolios of luxury conglomerates looking to diversify and gain market share. That’s why most of the beauty brands we know today belong to one of these eight companies that dominate the cosmetics industry.

L’Oréal

The French group tops the list with 39 beauty brands, including Lancôme, Maybelline, Urban Decay, Garnier, Essie and The Body Shop; and specialist and dermatological brands such as Pureology, La Roche-Posay and SkinCeuticals.

Estée Lauder

The US conglomerate has twenty-four brands in its portfolio. These include Donna Karan, Michael Kors, Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger and Tory Burch; and other brands such as Aveda, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, La Mer and MAC Cosmetics.

Puig

The Spanish company has brands and cosmetic licences for brands such as Carolina Herrera, Rabanne, Jean Paul Gaultier, Dries Van Noten, Nina Ricci, Byredo, Penhaligon’s, L’Artisan Parfumeur, Christian Louboutin, Benetton and Adolfo Dominguez.

Unilever

The British multinational has thirty-eight beauty sub-brands that are usually sold in supermarkets and pharmacies, such as Nexxus, Pond’s, TIGI, Dove, Vaseline and Lever 2000, among many others that you probably have in your drawer.

Procter & Gamble

Better known simply as P&G, the US multinational’s nine beauty brands include products you’ll always find at home, such as Head & Shoulders, Herbal Essences, Olay and Gillette.

Coty

The US company has gained territory in the beauty industry with a total of thirty-three brands including OPI Products, Rimmel and CoverGirl, as well as celebrity brands such as Katy Perry, David Beckham and Beyoncé.

Shiseido

The Japanese conglomerate, known for its skincare products of the same name, has more than thirty beauty and make-up brands, including Avène, BareMinerals, Nars Cosmetics and Laura Mercier.

Johnson & Johnson

This US multinational has a more limited, but no less important, portfolio. The company has nine cosmetic brands, including Aveeno, Neutrogena, Johnson’s and Lubriderm.
