Pablo Motos’ interview with Sofía Vergara has been shared (almost) as many times as the Calvin Klein advert in which Jeremy Allen White walks around a New York rooftop in his underwear, although the reason for the virality of the encounter, far from being the libido, has been the amount of jibes the Colombian has thrown at the presenter. From questioning her physique, her accent or getting the full name of the character in her new series wrong, the Colombian was not prepared to accept a single comment out of place from the presenter, and did not hesitate to respond. This has caused the interview to go viral and a multitude of international media outlets have echoed the presenter’s attitude.
Last Monday Sofia Vergara went on the show to present her new series, ‘Griselda’, a six-episode miniseries centred on a drug trafficker of the same name who operated in Miami since the late 70s and that we will be able to see through Netflix. The actress began by answering all of Pablo’s questions without a problem, but little by little they became less and less to her liking. Motos asked her if she was a natural blonde, even making fun of the actress’s accent when speaking English. To this, the Colombian actress replied: “How many Emmy nominations do you have, how many Golden Globe nominations do you have, and how many Golden Globe nominations do you have, and what about the actors’ union awards?
An isolated case?
Vergara is not the only woman who has been annoyed or ridiculed on the Antena 3 programme ‘El Hormiguero’. Pablo Motos has been the subject of a few controversies for his misogynistic and objectifying comments. Some time ago, Charlize Theron took advantage of her appearance on The Jimmy Kimmel Show to comment on how strange it was when she visited Pablo’s show: “The first thing they did backstage was tell us that we had to ‘go crazy. They played sexy music and asked me to dance. But that’s not all: Shakira, Alessandra Ambrosio, Ana de Armas, Kristen Stewart, Elsa Pataky, Úrsula Corberó, Miley Cyrus, Luna Fulgencio, Mónica Naranjo, Pilar Rubio, Cristina Pedroche, Chenoa and many more have been victims of Pablo Motos’ macho attitudes.
“Yes, it was. It was sexist, violent, uncomfortable, shabby, shameful and pitiful. How easy it is to do that from power. Less erasing and more apologies. We all make mistakes and it would be wiser to admit it. The end”, is how singer and composer Virginia Maestro described her time on the programme on Twitter. And it is not an isolated case, many of the women who have suffered this type of sexist comments or even aggressions by Pablo have expressed their discomfort afterwards. The Ministry of Equality even launched a campaign in which it publicised the presenter’s attitude, explaining that if they were men, he would not have this type of questions or attitudes. The Antena 3 channel and the Spanish press have done nothing but silence him during all this time, but the more they try, the more they fill the social networks with videos and memes.
