We still haven’t fully recovered from the last edition (a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld) and the theme of the Met Gala 2024 has already been announced, which, like every year, will take place on 6 May to inaugurate the Metropolitan Museum of New York’s annual fashion exhibition. It is one of the most eagerly awaited red carpets of the year – known as the “Oscars” of fashion – due to the exquisite attendance.
In 2024, the theme of the Met Gala 2024 is Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. Literally, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. The name of the exhibition, it will address sustainability through a very particular prism: “It’s basically an ode to nature,” acknowledged Andrew Bolton, chief curator of the Costume Institute and the main person responsible for this idea.
“Nature as a metaphor for fashion, its fragility and transience”. We will see many designs that allude to the beauty of flora and fauna: one example is butterflies, which we find in Alexander McQueen SS11 as in the architectural Haute Couture that Charles James proposed in 1955. We will explore 400 years of history, from the 17th century to the museum’s recent acquisitions by brands such as Phillip Lim, Connor Yves and Stella McCartney.
The gala, the big fashion party, is followed by an exhibition that takes place on the premises of the Metropolitan Museum in New York and is in keeping with the dress code. In 2024 it will be sponsored by Loewe and TikTok, and will open its doors a few days later, on 10 May. If you’re planning a trip to the Big Apple next year, take note: it will be open until 2 September 2024.
The exhibition will be open from 10 May to 2 September 2024 and will feature different galleries that will be organised by nature-related themes. The show will explore themes such as rebirth and renewal, through creative and immersive activations to convey scents, sounds, textures and movements, applying AI, CGI, animation and projections.
The names of the celebrities who will emcee the next MET Gala have not been revealed at this time, as they are never revealed in advance. Nor have the evening’s hosts been revealed. Last year’s edition dedicated to Karl Lagerfeld was hosted by actresses Micaela Coell and Penélope Cruz, as well as tennis legend Roger Federer and singer Dua Lipa.
