The glorification of the mob wife aesthetic

The aestheticisation of the mafia now puts the spotlight on the gangster’s wife, and the re-emergence of her powerful figure in real life.

The glorification of the mob wife aesthetic

The gangster’s wife, represented as a sensual and hermetic woman who captivates with her hypnotic gaze and opulent style, is now projected at the core of the system. A ruthless archetype that crystallises in the collective imagination around an aesthetic that symbolises power, wealth and glory.

The fashion police now put on the radar this profile suspended between mystery, drama and the latent vindication of femininity based on maximalism, as a kind of disruptive riposte to the minimalist beauty or ‘old money’ style of stealth wealth that was romanticised throughout 2023.

Now universal desire is channelled through maximalism for a new season in which references to mafia muses and/or iconic women such as Carmela Soprano, Ginger McKenna in ‘Casino’ or Karen Hill in ‘Goodfellas’ dazzle; in their jewellery, fur coats and animal print garments in which they walked through all the stages: from funerals to sumptuous dinners in haute cuisine restaurants with large doses of illegal substances.

It is the revival of codes inspired by Italian-American culture in New York, by the wives of the great Italian mafia figures such as Tony Soprano, Tony Montana, Michael Corleono and Matteo Messina Denaro.

The simulation of the femme-fatale

The generational revisiting of ‘The Sopranos‘ for its 25th anniversary has also had a lot to do with this aesthetic glorification. As has the collective obsession with vintage fur coats as a latent macro-trend in fashion today.

The mafia wife now enters a new era with big faux fur coats, sharp nails, lace stockings, printed pieces, big sunglasses and infinite boots with which to play that social status or role, but now as a protagonist; dissolving into the background the infantilisation of the coquette or that spirit that eternalises youth.

Behind it all lies a kind of attitude and aura of a confident woman who wears archival pieces by Dior or decadent looks by Versace, Gucci or D&G that fuse animal print with leather and an infinite amount of gold jewellery. A high-end imaginary that has been replicated, transcending fiction, by contemporary style references such as the Kardashians, Dua Lipa or Hailey Bieber, who encapsulate the updated energy of the mafia wife.

The impact of #mobwifeaesthetic has been so intense on the internet that the streets are turning into improvised catwalks of all its references, with leopard prints, oval sunglasses, leather and big fur coats with which you can now become independent from the gangster and become the main character of your own existence.
