One of the most influential decades in contemporary culture.
Under the title “The 90s”, Tate Britain will open a major exhibition in October that revisits the spirit of an era marked by excess, unfiltered creativity and an urgent need for freedom. Leading the project is Edward Enninful, one of the most influential figures in fashion and visual culture of our time.
To talk about Britain in the 1990s is to talk about a country that, after a deep economic recession, found a form of resistance in hedonism. It was a decade in which punk mutated, Britpop became the soundtrack of an entire generation, and British contemporary art blew up the established norms. While Oasis and Blur fought for the top spot on the charts, the Young British Artists took over museums and galleries, and the Cool Britannia phenomenon—with Kate Moss as its absolute icon—exported a new cultural identity to the world.
The exhibition is presented as an immersive journey into that ‘new dawn of optimism, freedom and rebellion’ that defined the era. Fashion, photography, art, music and pop culture will be showcased in the galleries of Tate Britain through the art of Juergen Teller, Nick Knight, David Sims, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan.
‘The 90s’ will be open to the public from 8 October 2026 to 14 February 2027.
