The power of pomegranate in cosmetics

The pomegranate is one of the most consumed fruits in the autumn and winter months, especially in salads, sautéed with vegetables or in desserts. Hypocaloric and therefore ideal for diets, it has anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing and antioxidant properties that are also highly appreciated in the field of cosmetics, where its extract and seed oil are used to make creams, serums, scrubs and tonics, among others.

Various studies have shown the benefits that pomegranate in its concentrated form can have for treating prostate problems in men, and in fact many men consume pomegranate juice as a preventive measure. It is a fruit with an intense red colour inside that is grown mainly in Mediterranean countries but also in Asia, in fact Iran, India, China, Israel, Turkey and Spain.

Rich in flavonoids and anthocyanins, its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties are the most remarkable, playing a very important role also in our cardiovascular health. As far as cosmetics are concerned, its use in seed extract or oil has grown in recent years: ‘We value very much how rich it is in vitamins, minerals, polyphenols and other nutrients to introduce it in our cosmetics. Although we don’t use it in scrubs, its enzymes stimulate cell renewal when applied for this purpose, improving skin tone and texture.

‘Its oil is wonderful, it moisturises, relieves swelling, promotes collagen production and helps the skin’s elasticity… and all this, with just a few drops applied directly or in the cosmetic that contains it, in our case, an anti-ageing day cream that includes it in its virgin and organic version’ – says Filip Van, CEO of the natural cosmetics firm Di Oleo.

Another example is Nezeni Cosmetics, which uses pomegranate extract in one of its best-selling products: the enzymatic peeling for dry, sensitive and reactive skin. In its case, it activates the skin’s natural exfoliation process and keeps the pores clean, thus improving the condition of the facial dermis.

It should be clarified that pomegranate seed extract and pomegranate seed oil are not exactly the same, they are obtained differently. In the case of the extract, a part of the pomegranate is taken and diluted in a second agent such as water or alcohol (ethanol). Seed oil is a concentrate obtained by squeezing only the seeds.
