Abel Tesfaye, artistically known as The Weeknd, has statistically become the most popular artist in the world after setting two new Guinness World Records.
The 33-year-old Canadian receives the Guinness title for the highest number of monthly listeners on Spotify for a male singer, with 111.6 million, also being the first artist to reach 100 million monthly listeners on the platform.
These figures on Spotify surpass those of artists such as Miley Cyrus, with 82.3 million monthly listeners; Shakira, with 81.7 million; Taylor Swift, with 80.3 million; and Rihanna, who reaches 78.2 million. Ed Sheeran is currently the male artist closest to The Weeknd, with 77.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
In 2016, the singer had already appeared in the Guinness World Records book, receiving the title for the album with the most streams on Spotify in 2015 and another for the most consecutive weeks in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 by a solo male artist. On top of all this, he also has the biggest song in history: “Blinding Lights” is the track with the most plays on Spotify, with more than 3.4 billion listens.
