Amazon has revealed the list of readers’ favourite books in Spain, according to the best sellers over the last 12 months.

These are the most read books on Amazon

The results show that fiction novels are the most desired by Spanish readers, and within this category, mystery and suspense novels are the favourites. In addition, titles by authors who self-publish with Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), Amazon’s self-publishing tool, appear in the top ten most popular titles in five of the main cities. In this category, works such as Cristian Perfumo’s Los crímenes del glaciar, Fernando Gamboa’s Piel and Roberto Martínez Guzmán’s La suerte de los idiotas stand out.

Although there are some regional differences, readers in the main Spanish cities have similar literary preferences and in many cases agree on their favourite title. Atomic Habits: Small Changes, Extraordinary Results, a non-fiction work by American author James Clear, ranks first in Barcelona, Murcia, Valencia and Palma; while The Naval Ravikant Almanac: A Guide to Wealth and Happiness, also a non-fiction work by Eric Jorgenson, a self-publishing author with KDP, tops the list of the most popular titles in Malaga.

In the rest of the main cities, the top of the list is occupied by fiction titles. Thus, Todo vuelve, by Juan Gómez-Jurado, a highly successful writer who has published some of his works with KDP, is the best-selling book in Bilbao, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Zaragoza; while El problema final, by Arturo Pérez Reverte, occupies first place in Madrid and Las hijas de la criada, by Sonsoles Ónega, in Seville. Although if we look at the most read title in each of these cities, the truth is that in the ranking of the ten most popular books in 7 of these 10 cities we find, for the most part, works of fiction.

Mystery and suspense novels triumph in most major Spanish cities

Although the best-selling book in Barcelona is a non-fiction work, Atomic Habits: Small Changes, Extraordinary Results by James Clear, the inhabitants of Barcelona have a clear preference for fiction, especially mystery and thriller novels, as shown by the ranking of the ten most popular books in the city, with more than half of the titles belonging to these sub-genres. But juvenile fantasy novels are not far behind either, with two of the most popular titles of the moment, Wings of Blood and Wings of Iron, by author Rebecca Yarros, in seventh and ninth position, respectively, on this list.

Fiction titles, specifically mystery and suspense novels, also triumph among readers in Bilbao. Juan Gómez-Jurado is the most repeated author in the list of the ten most popular titles in the city, with his novels Todo Vuelve, in first position, and Todo Arde, in eighth position. In addition, Bilbao readers are also opting for self-published titles, with two works by KDP authors in the top ten bestsellers in the city: A Sabbatical Trip is for Me: How to Let Go and Go Around the World, by Bilbao author Jon Ander Ferri, and When the Wind Blows, by Jack Benton.

Readers in Madrid also prefer thrillers, mystery and detective novels, such as Arturo Pérez Reverte’s El problema final, at the top of the ranking, and Joel Dicker’s Un animal salvaje, in seventh place. However, in the capital they are also backing historical novels such as Las hijas de la criada, by Sonsoles Ónega, and even self-help and personal growth books such as Hábitos atómicos: Cambios pequeños, resultados extraordinarios, by the American writer James Clear, and El Hombre en busca de Sentido, by Viktor Emil Frankl.

In the list of best-selling titles in Seville we find mostly fiction titles, and historical novels stand out in particular, with Las hijas de la criada, by Sonsoles Ónega, which tops the ranking of best sellers, and Maldita Roma; La conquista del poder de Julio César, by Santiago Posteguillo, which is in fifth position. Also noteworthy is the clear preference of Sevillian readers for Spanish literature: 7 of the 10 best-selling titles in the city are written by Spanish authors.

Along the same lines, Palma’s readers are also committed to our literature, as more than half of the best-selling books in the city are by Spanish authors, such as Las hijas de la criada, by Sonsoles Ónega, El problema final, by Arturo Pérez Reverte, Cómo hacer que te pasen cosas buenas: Entiende tu cerebro, gestiona tus emociones, mejora tu vida, by Marian Rojas Estapé, or La chica del verano, by the writer and content creator La Vecina Rubia, among others.

In the case of Valencia, we find the same number of fiction novels as non-fiction books, although James Clear’s Atomic Habits: Small Changes, Extraordinary Results tops the list. The list of most popular books in the city also includes Maldita Roma: La conquista del poder de Julio César, by Valencian author Santiago Posteguillo.

In the list of the best-selling books in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, however, there are slight differences and we find readers who are more fond of self-published literature: 7 of the 10 best-selling books on the island belong to independent authors, most of these being fiction titles, including SAMSIL: Spirits and Shadows, written by Silvia Cubero and Guzmán Samuel, and When the Wind Blows, by Jack Benton, among others.

In the case of Malaga we find, among the best-selling titles in the city, more self-help and personal growth books than any other, such as The Naval Ravikant Almanac: A Guide to Wealth and Happiness, a self-published work by Eric Jorgenson, in first position. We also find in this list health-related works such as Guía básica de Inteligencia Médica Artificial, by independent author José Antonio Trujillo Ruiz, the second favourite book of Malagueños on Amazon in the last year, or Adiós a la inflamación; Cómo prevenir enfermedades, retrasar el envejecimiento y perder peso, by nutritionist Sandra Moñino.

Similarly, readers in Murcia also prefer non-fiction, and among the top ten best-selling titles in the city we find both self-help and personal development books, such as Atomic Habits: Small Changes, Extraordinary Results, by James Clear, and books that encourage creativity, such as Destroy This Diary, by Keri Smith, or textbooks.

Finally, in Zaragoza, fiction titles triumphed among readers. Bestsellers in the city include The Boy in the Hat by indie author and content creator Mike Aquarium, as well as two fantasy novels by author Rebecca Yarros, Wings of Blood and Wings of Iron, among other titles.
