The LOEWE FOUNDATION is pleased to announce the names of the thirty finalists for the LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize 2023. The finalists’ works will be exhibited at Isamu Noguchi’s studio at the Noguchi Museum in New York from 17 May to 18 June 2023.
A committee of experts chose this year’s finalists from among 2,700 entries from artisans in 117 countries. Those selected represent 16 different nations and specialise in different disciplines ranging from ceramics to wood, textiles, furniture, paper, basketry, glass, metal, jewellery, lacquer, leather and bookbinding.
The jury, composed of thirteen leading figures from the worlds of design, architecture, journalism, criticism and museum curatorship, will select the winner of the Craft Prize 2023.
Among the finalists is Luz Moreno Pinart, the only Spaniard in this edition who will represent Spain with her work ‘El Retiro’. A media work that is created by knotting fine strands of paper using techniques that Luz learned during an artistic residency in Kyoto. The result is an interconnected network of knots that represents different moments in the artist’s life. The title of the work refers to the most important park in Madrid, a destination of stillness, where to reflect and observe the environment from the tranquillity and silence. The red-tinted knots evoke the meaning of memory, while the thin strands of paper that connect them resemble the stamen of a flower, the pollen-producing organ, symbol of life and growth.
This annual competition was launched by the LOEWE FOUNDATION for the first time in 2016 to celebrate excellence, artistic merit and innovation in modern craftsmanship. Conceived by Jonathan Anderson, LOEWE‘s creative director, the award recognises the importance of craftsmanship in today’s culture and acknowledges the work of artists whose talent, vision and innovative will set the paradigms of the future.
