Tokischa talks about the treatment of Afro-Latin artists in today’s music industry. In an interview published in El País, she opened up about the struggle against racism and Juan Luis Guerra’s apparent aversion to dembow music.
In an interview with El País, Tokischa was asked about the progress of Afro-Latino artists and replied: “The other day I was reading about my ancestors and I realised that things haven’t changed that much. Racism continues, slavery continues, maybe not literally with a whip anymore, but there is slavery through labour, through lack of education. It is a cycle that repeats itself. However, we try to keep opening doors”.
Meanwhile, the Dominican singer also said that one of her country’s icons, Juan Luis Guerra, is not a fan of the dembow music scene to which she belongs. “In my country there is no Madonna or Rosalía. There is a great artist, Juan Luis Guerra, who doesn’t look at us. Because for him, the street genre is a shame. So we had to go out and look for it”.
