Duane “Keefe D” Davis, the man Las Vegas prosecutors say is responsible for the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, was arrested early Friday morning.
Tupac Shakur also known as Tupac or 2Pac was the most popular rapper of the 1990s. By the summer of 1996, at the age of 25, he had sold more than 33 million records, making him number one on the charts. Until a bullet crossed his path and he died in September 1996.
In July, Nevada officers conducted a search of a house outside the city of Las Vegas in an attempt to find clues to one of the suspects in the case. The house Las Vegas police searched belonged to Duane Davis’ wife, Paula Clemons. Duane was arrested Friday while taking a walk outside Las Vegas.
Duane Davis himself has admitted to providing the gun and being in the Cadillac from which the bullets were fired in several interviews and in his book “Compton Street Legend”. While the gang member is not the gunman who shot the singer, investigators had long identified Duane as one of the four suspects from the beginning of the investigation.
Davis, 60, is a former Crip (Los Angeles street gang) and claimed to be the uncle of Orlando Anderson, who is suspected of being the shooter. Anderson was a known rival of Tupac and had been involved in a casino fight with Tupac and his crew prior to the fatal shooting. He always denied any involvement in his death and died two years later.
Duane was arrested Friday while taking a walk outside Las Vegas. At the press conference, the homicide lieutenant stated that “Duane Davis was the ringleader of this group of individuals who committed this crime and orchestrated the plan that was carried out”. If convicted, a sentence of up to 20 additional years for gang activity will be added to the murder charge.
