Vault by Vans has signed New Jersey born and bred designer Imran Potato for a six-piece footwear collection. Imran has built his creative identity by subverting fashion with humour in everything he does.
Motivated to inspire others and prove that nothing is impossible, Imran has found himself at the crossroads of disruption and design. For his first Vault by Vans collection, the designer helps reissue the KNU SKOOL VR3 LX; a model that pays homage to the early 90s skate-inspired shoe silhouette that the brand released in 1998 and later reissued exclusively through Vans Japan.
For its latest iteration, Imran has taken the oversized DNA and further exaggerated its design specs to include a suede upper with contrast stitching along with a 3D side stripe protruding from the quarter panel. The KNU SKOOL has been updated with an oversized tongue, thick cotton laces and a custom printed potato waffle sole. It’s available in three colourways, including classic black and two cheetah prints available in asphalt/black and gold glitter/bombay brown.
In its attempt to modernise the KNU SKOOL, the shoe’s suede panels are sourced from a premium LWG tannery for environmental responsibility. The silhouette is also part of Vans VR3, which represents the brand’s journey towards 100% responsibly sourced renewable and recycled materials for the brand’s four core materials by 2030.
The silhouette is also equipped with an EcoCush™ EVA foam insole derived partially from sugar cane and an EcoWaffle™ rubber outsole sourced from sources that follow proven sustainable practices intended to reduce the impact on the planet.
“The KNU SKOOL is the best trainer silhouette of all time. It’s the shoe I always wanted but couldn’t get because of its mystery. The ultimate unobtainable eBay shoe,” says Imran. “The Vault team literally opened my vault for me, and I can’t thank them enough. This collaboration is a dream come true, and my most important work to date.”
A trio of SK8-HI® VR3 LX complete the Vault by Vans x Imran Potato collection. The designs retain the iconic hi-top elements, but with primitively drawn human hands on the side panels and tongues. The concept is an evolution inspired by the viral and satirically comical Potato Caveman trainers.
Coinciding with the Vault by Vans collection, Imran Potato will be releasing his next batch of limited clothing and merchandise via his website.
