Vinted publishes its first luxury trends report

Vinted introduced the IVS Item Verification Service last year, allowing users to verify the authenticity of expertly selected designer items for a fee. From verification centres in Hamburg and London, Vinted’s experienced team thoroughly checks items for authenticity, providing shoppers with genuine products and increasing trust within the community.

With an expanding list of brands eligible for verification, including Bottega Veneta, Celine and Jacquemus, Adidas or New Balance, Vinted’s commitment to authenticity and satisfaction remains paramount. The platform continues to enhance its verification services to ensure a seamless and secure shopping experience for luxury enthusiasts around the world. Vinted’s first luxury trends report yields the following (and interesting) results:

Top-selling brands in Europe

Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Gucci are the top-selling luxury brands1 on Vinted, with Louis Vuitton standing out for its speed of sales. The Vinted community also shows a strong preference for Hermès, Dior, Saint Laurent and Prada. While Cartier’s popularity has increased, interest in Balenciaga has decreased slightly compared to the previous year.

‘With millions of registered members in over 20 markets, Vinted has the ability to quickly identify resale trends,’ explains Cécile Wickmann, Senior Director of Luxury at Vinted, ‘This community power is backed by our team’s expertise and knowledge of the luxury fashion market, making Vinted the definitive destination for luxury buyers and sellers.’

Regional differences in luxury preferences

‘Although the best-selling luxury brands on Vinted appear in the top ten lists in all European markets, we still see distinct variations in buying and selling patterns. Italy, for example, is a classic second-hand fashion seller, with a significant number of sellers compared to buyers, while France thrives as a major buying hub, with more buyers than sellers,’ says Wickmann. ‘Members in the Netherlands are looking for more high-end loafers by far, while Brits show a greater interest in black luxury items compared to their European counterparts.’

Wickmann adds, ‘It also highlights that regional brands have consolidated their presence in their respective countries.’ Top-selling luxury brands in France include Chanel, Hermès and Dior. Mulberry is among the top three best-selling brands in the UK, while the Burberry Bridle Tartan Check bag is emerging as one of the best-loved items in 2024 so far. Fendi and Gucci are among the best-selling luxury brands in Italy, while Loewe is favoured by fashion enthusiasts in Spain. In Germany, MCM secures a place in the best-selling ranking.

Most loved items

The Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM and the Moncler Maya jacket have emerged as the most prized high-end items by Vinted members in 2024 so far. In France, the Dior B22 is highly coveted, while in the UK, the most desired items include the Canada Goose Wyndham parka and the Gucci Dionysus Mini bag. In Spain, there is a preference for Zimmermann dresses and in Poland, the Celine Triomphe and Lady Dior bags are highly desirable.

Dutch users have shown a strong preference for the Maison Margiela Tabi Ankle boots, originally launched in 1988, and the Chanel Cambon bag from 2009. In Germany, the MCM Shopper and the Louis Vuitton Pochette from the 1990s have attracted significant attention.

The archival and vintage trend continues

‘Currently, there is a demand for vintage pieces from the 80s and 90s on the second-hand market. Today’s fashion is inspired by past decades and collections. As part of the ‘archive trend’, designer brands are constantly looking at old collections and models from their archives,’ explains Björn Holzhauer, Senior Brand Expert at Vinted.

‘While the last few seasons have focused on the late 90s and the Y2K aesthetic, such as the revival of the Dior Saddle bag, the Fendi Baguette or the Prada Nylon, now things are going even further back in time. Elements of 80s or even 50s style, with feminine pin-up dresses or polka dots. This could also increase the demand for vintage items of this era and style. Vintage tweed blazers, such as those from Etro or Ralph Lauren, could also increase in resale.’

Top investment pieces of 2024

On Vinted, members can sell designer pieces without commission to the seller, allowing them to earn extra money. Some vintage designer items even turn out to be hidden treasures. Due to their unique design and brand heritage, specific pieces of certain brands have evolved into popular collectors’ items. In recent months, some of the most expensive items sold on Vinted include the Hermès Kelly bag, the Rolex Datejust and the Chanel Flap Bag.

‘Due to scarcity, demand is increasingly outstripping supply and some items, especially vintage handbags, are proving to be real winners in terms of resale,’ says Holzhauer. ‘The myths and idealisation surrounding the creation also play an important role. With a few designs in the right colour and in good condition, a profit can be made immediately after purchase. And the forecast that new prices will continue to rise is promising.’

‘When buying second-hand designer fashion, you should be suspicious if a sought-after item is offered at an unusually low price. Especially online, I recommend buying only on platforms that also offer physical verification of the item, such as Vinted. There are so many well-made fakes that only highly trained experts can recognise them. You should no longer rely solely on dust bags, boxes and invoices, as even these are very professionally counterfeited,’ explains Holzhauer.

Vinted sellers of Gen-Z are uploading clothes from ten years ago, labelling them as ‘vintage’ at exorbitant prices.
