Watching ‘Stories’ without leaving a trace is now a reality: here’s what Instagram’s paid version will look like

Meta is once again pushing the boundaries of the social media experience with an idea that, while it may sound like a forum rumour, is already in testing: Instagram Plus. This new experimental subscription within Instagram leans into something users have long been asking for — or perhaps fearing — more control, more data… and an extra layer of discretion. Its standout feature is a ‘stealth mode’ for Stories, allowing users to view content without appearing in the viewer list. Yes, the dream of every digital stalker, now officially packaged by Meta.

But it doesn’t stop there. Instagram Plus also introduces an extended lifespan for Stories, moving from the classic 24 hours to 48, alongside more detailed analytics such as exact rewatch counts. On top of that, users can create unlimited custom audience lists — a clear upgrade from Close Friends — as well as send animated Superlikes and highlight one Story per week to boost its visibility. Altogether, it’s a toolkit designed for those who don’t just consume content, but want to fine-tune how it’s distributed and how it performs.

For now, the experiment is live in selected markets such as Mexico, Japan and the Philippines, with an accessible starting price expected to sit around one to two dollars per month. Importantly, this does not replace Meta Verified, as both serve different purposes — one focused on identity, the other on features. Meta insists the core experience will remain free, but the move makes one thing clear: the future of social platforms is heading towards more layers, more control… and, quite possibly, more subscriptions.
