As temperatures continue to plummet, TikTok is full of tricks to stop your eyes from watering in the cold and wind. But are they safe?

One of the first to join the trend is tiktoker Ayaat Mishaal, who reveals that applying Vaseline to the corners of your eyes with a cotton bud can stop your eyes from watering. ”Putting Vaseline on the corners of my eyes before I leave the house to stop my eyes watering is the best thing TikTok has taught me”. TikTok’s 9-second video has already garnered more than 20.8 million views, 2.2 million likes and 12.7 thousand comments on the platform.

Supplement Doctor‘s experts warn of the potential risks: “Applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the corners of the eyes can act as a protective barrier, helping to protect against the harsh effects of cold weather and reduce excess tearing. It can be a simple but effective trick to keep eyes comfortable in harsh weather conditions and keep make-up intact. However, this practice should be done with caution”.

HIGHXTAR (H) – Why do eyes water when it’s cold?

SUPPLEMENT DOCTOR (S) – Tearing is often caused by windy days and cold, dry air, which can dehydrate the eyes. When the eyes are exposed to these weather conditions, they lose moisture, causing dryness and irritation. To combat this dryness, the lacrimal glands are activated and produce excess tears as a protective response.

(H) – What are the potential risks?

(S) – Caution is essential when applying any substance near the eyes. Be sure to use only a small amount of petroleum jelly and avoid getting it directly into the eyes. If you experience any irritation or discomfort, it is best to flush your eyes with water and discontinue use.

This technique is not recommended if you have specific eye conditions or concerns, as it is always a good idea to consult an eye care professional for individual advice.

This technique is strongly discouraged for people prone to milia or styes. Milia are small white spots around the eyes, often also called “milk spots”, which usually disappear on their own.

Because the skin around the eyes is remarkably thin, applying an occlusive agent such as petroleum jelly to this area can increase the likelihood of developing milia if used too often. So, while this new trend may be considered a quick fix, it is not an ideal long-term solution for those suffering from watery eyes.

In addition, there are alternatives you can do to help protect your eyes in cold and windy weather, such as wearing protective eyewear like sunglasses, trying eye drops to add extra moisture to your eyes and staying hydrated, as hydration helps maintain the moisture balance in your eyes.
