What’s going on with Kris Jenner in China?

Thousands of users are swapping their profile pictures for a photo of the matriarch of the Kardashian-Jenner clan.

The internet has once again revolutionised pop culture, and this time it’s come from China, with Kris Jenner at the centre of it all. The thing is, the businesswoman and celebrity has – unexpectedly – become a symbol of good luck for an entire generation, and thousands of users are using images of her as their profile picture in the hope of attracting success, money or even passing exams. It’s as if she were some sort of digital talisman.

The trend began to gain momentum following a TikTok video by Chinese influencer Marcelo Wang, which has now racked up two million views. In it, he explains how seemingly random the trend is, whilst, ironically, the comments section was flooded with profiles featuring Kris’s image.

The key lies in Red Note, the local TikTok-style platform where the phenomenon has really taken off. According to data compiled by Business Insider, the hashtag #krisjenner has already surpassed 100,000 posts and racked up over 53 million views in just a few days. And the best bit? Kris Jenner herself is backing the movement, commenting on one of the viral videos with her iconic phrase ‘You’re doing amazing, sweetie’.

Beyond the meme, there is a cultural dimension to this, as for many young people the businesswoman embodies success built on discipline, strategy and hard work.
