Although we often overlook it, protecting ourselves from the sun is vital if we don’t want to run certain risks. The fact is that we almost always apply sun cream, lotion or spray to the same areas of the body, ignoring some other areas that are also important, such as the ears, eyelids, feet… and even under the swimming costume. The head, for example, because we have long hair, we think it is not necessary, as with the ears or the neck, it would be enough to tie up our hair to be able to apply it.
The feet also need protection, in summer we often take off our shoes during the day: “We should not only do this on the top of our feet, but also on the soles, heels, toes and ankles, if we don’t do this we can also get burns” – Filip Van, CEO and founder of the natural cosmetics company Di Oleo, warns us.
The specialist also points out the importance of tanning under your swimming costume: “No matter whether you are wearing a bikini or a swimming costume, you should also protect yourself under your swimming costume, as it is not always in place because you are always moving around and this area is exposed for too long. I advise applying sunscreen before putting on your swimming costume or bikini to prevent this from happening.
Lips have extremely sensitive and vulnerable skin, but their sun protection is somewhat different, as depending on the formula, you can damage them even more. For this reason, we must be very careful about which products to apply to them, prioritising ingredients such as zinc oxide and shea butter in their composition.
Lastly, the eyelids. When you apply sunscreen, it is normal to have your eyes open to see what you are doing, so it is quite possible that you forget your eyelids: “They have particularly sensitive skin that can burn easily, so sunscreen should be applied to the whole face without forgetting the eyelids, taking care not to get any in the eyes”.
