Inspired by the huarache —the traditional Mexican sandal that has spanned generations and become a staple of Chicano street style— Chavarria and adidas Originals bring its essence into the present day with a contemporary twist. The result is a sneaker–sandal hybrid that breaks every style rule.
Featuring an exaggerated grip sole, premium woven leather upper and open-toe slip-on design, the Chavarria Oaxaca Slip On can be worn with crisp white socks or barefoot, paired with a midi skirt or shorts. Its versatility is unmatched.
During the launch panel, the discussion centred on the importance of legacy in innovation, and how understanding the past leads to more authentic collaborations. Staying true to his commitment to social justice, Chavarria has woven a direct reference to his Mexican–American heritage into this release. The campaign, shot by Marco Ovando and fronted by Mexican artist Juan Berthau, reinforces this narrative.
Also on the panel were archival specialist Sandra Trapp, Originals design director Rafael Mayorga, and storytelling director Valentina Benítez Castellanos. The event also celebrated the ongoing partnership with Bad Bunny and showcased the adidas Originals for Bad Bunny archive, which continues to create a buzz online.
For now, there’s no confirmed release date for Chavarria and adidas Originals’ reimagined huarache. On Instagram, Chavarria simply captioned a post of the shoe with “Soon“. We’ll be keeping a close watch on the adidas and Willy Chavarria websites for updates.
