Box office performance in international markets has been much better than expected, and the production has become one of the biggest of the holiday season. The film grossed $39 million in its first weekend in the US, which, when added to overseas figures, totalled $151.4 million worldwide.
The film, which tells the story of the origins of the famous chocolatier Willy Wonka, has received good reviews from the specialised press and the general public for Paul King’s direction, Simon Farnaby’s screenplay and Chalamet’s performance. The cast also includes Hugh Grant, Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key, Calah Lane, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Natasha Rothwell, Rich Fulcher, Rakhee Thakrar, Tom Davis and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.
