The dark side of beauty.
Disney+ adds a new sci-fi and body horror title to its catalogue with The Beauty. Created by Ryan Murphy, the series premieres today, 23 January, and features Bella Hadid as one of the most prominent names in the cast, alongside Ashton Kutcher.
The production is based on the comics by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley. The story is set in a society obsessed with beauty, where a virus promises to improve the physical appearance of those who contract it. However, what seems like the perfect solution hides side effects that lead to a dark narrative shaped by power, business and control over the body.
Hadid plays Ruby, a supermodel who becomes the centre of the conflict. During a fashion show in Paris, in the middle of Fashion Week, she suffers a breakdown and begins a violent escape through the city. From that point on, an investigation starts to uncover the origin of the virus and who is really behind it.
A radical transformation
One of the most striking aspects of The Beauty is its visual aesthetic. Bella Hadid herself has shared several behind-the-scenes images on social media, revealing the work of the make-up and special effects team. Prosthetics, wounds, blood and an almost zombie-like appearance completely transform the model’s usual image.
The photos sparked a strong reaction among her followers. One of the most notable comments came from her mother, Yolanda Hadid, who wrote “proud mama”. Models such as Kaia Gerber and Poppy Delevingne have also shown their support.
Her first major acting role
Although Hadid had previously appeared in reality shows and minor roles, this is her first major acting project. The model has publicly thanked the team behind the series for the opportunity, especially Ryan Murphy, director of photography Jason McCormick and writer Stephen Shepard.
With The Beauty, Disney+ adds a visually powerful series to its catalogue, while Bella Hadid takes a key step in her career, leaving the runway behind to enter a much darker universe.
