Instagram is taking an important step towards transparency with Your Algorithm, an AI-driven panel that reveals and adjusts the interests influencing Reels recommendations. The tool appears in response to regulatory pressure and to an audience increasingly aware of how their feeds are constructed.
The new control is accessed through an icon located in the upper-right corner of Reels. Tapping it displays an AI-generated summary featuring labels such as “creativity”, “sports hype”, “fitness motivation”, or “skateboarding”. From this menu, users can boost, mute, or add specific topics. They can also choose very niche interests that don’t fit into standard categories.
Your Algorithm also lets users share a snapshot of their interest profile to Stories, turning feed personalisation into a social gesture similar to a Spotify Wrapped moment.
For now, the feature is available in English and only in the United States. Meta has confirmed that it will expand to more markets and, over time, will extend to other areas of the app, such as Explore and additional recommendation surfaces.
The launch arrives at a critical moment. Regulators are examining what they describe as “predatory algorithms”, and TikTok already offers customisable feeds through tools like Manage Topics. In this context, Instagram is opting for a more explicit and editable form of personalisation.
For creators, brands and niche communities, the shift is significant. Users can now fine-tune what they want to see with greater precision, which strengthens scenes built around specific interests rather than pure virality.
Instagram brings together Rosalía, Tyler, The Creator, Clint419 and more.
