5 signs to know if your pet hates your partner

If you’re a true animal lover, you’ll know that a pet has the power to break up your love life. In fact, an internal study by TrustedHousesitters reveals that 78% of pet owners would break up a relationship if their furry friend didn’t approve of their partner, and 17% have ended a relationship because their pet couldn’t stand them. To help you deal with this tricky issue, we’ve consulted veterinarian Rebecca MacMillan for some advice.

Dr MacMillan recommends two essential strategies to make the first impression between your pet and your partner a success: 1. handle the situation sensitively and 2. don’t take reactions personally. The vet advises starting in a neutral place, such as a park, so that your pet and your partner can get to know each other without the stress of being at home. It is crucial to maintain all kinds of positive interactions such as walks and play to build a friendly relationship and reduce the possibility of conflict.

How do you know if your pet disapproves of your partner?

Territory marking

One of the most obvious signs of animal discontent is territory marking. If you notice that your pet is leaving his mark in places that are normally used by your boyfriend, such as the sofa, the bed or even on his clothes, it is a clear sign that he is trying to establish his dominance. This behaviour is an instinctive way of showing that he considers those spaces as his own, especially if he feels that his position in the home is being threatened.

Body language

Your pet’s body language is an open book for understanding his feelings. Watch his postures and gestures closely when your boyfriend is around. If your dog or cat shows signs of discomfort such as ears back, tail between his legs or a hunched body, he may be expressing stress or distrust. These signs may indicate that your pet is not comfortable with your partner’s presence, and it is crucial not to ignore these cues.

Aggressive or avoidant behaviour

Aggressive or avoidant attitudes are clear signs that your pet has problems with your boyfriend. Growling, snorting, and in the worst cases, attempted bites, are all signs that your partner’s presence is provoking a negative reaction. On the other hand, if your pet actively avoids your boyfriend by hiding or retreating when he enters the room, it is also a sign that he is uncomfortable around him.

Stress caused by a poor relationship with your partner can manifest itself in health problems for your pet. Changes in appetite, excessive licking, or digestive problems are signs that stress is affecting their well-being. If you notice that your pet is sick or seems distressed on a recurring basis when your partner is at home, it is important to consult a veterinarian to address both the health problem and the underlying stress.

Insistence on interaction

When your boyfriend insists on interacting with your pet despite his signs of rejection, he may be exacerbating the problem. Pressure to get along with your pet can lead to further anxiety and discomfort. It is vital that your partner respects your pet’s boundaries and allows the relationship to develop naturally and without forcing.
