NBA star Kyrie Irving has purchased a home from the family of George Floyd.
Earlier this week, CNN reported that a friend of Floyd’s family, Stephen Jackson, revealed to The Rematch that the Brooklyn Nets point guard had purchased a home for the family. In the interview, Jackson – a former NBA player – began by discussing shows of support for Floyd’s 7-year-old daughter, Gianna, following her father’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police in May.
“I think [about] the fact that he’s getting so much love, not just from us, but from people all over the world. I just keep doing what I said I was going to do, I said ‘I was going to be my brother’s keeper’ and take care of his daughter and make sure her next few days are the best,” Jackson said before briefly mentioning Irving’s generous gesture, as well as gifts from stars like Barbra Streisand and Lil Wayne.
In a later statement, Jackson also added that Irving just “wanted to help George’s family” and “did so in a heartbeat” when they told him about their need for a home.
In addition, Irving himself spoke about the gift during a press conference Tuesday saying he wanted to continue “[fulfilling] our purpose of serving many of the underserved communities.”
“Those don’t necessarily get the same attention from others,” he said. “So, I’m just trying to do my part, that’s all.”
