The creative director of Balenciaga, Demna Gvasalia, was awarded the Medal of Honour by the President of Georgia on Monday.
Salome Zourabichvili acknowledged Gvasalia‘s legacy on Monday when she presented him with the Medal of Honour for “his contribution to popularising Georgia abroad”.
As the president said, “Demna, it is a great honour to present you with the Medal of Honour. Today is a commemoration of the Fall of Sokhumi, a day of mourning for Georgia, but giving you this award means that somewhere, we have won. Demna Gvasalia is a role model for the next generation of creative Georgians”.
2021 has been a great year for the designer. A few months ago, he presented his first haute couture collection for Balenciaga, recovering the tradition that had been lost after the closure of the atelier in 1968. Moreover, with his designs, he inspired Alessandro Michele, creative director of Gucci, for the Balenciaga “Hacking Lab”.
