A Moco Museum is born in Barcelona

Moco Museum will open its doors on 16 October 2021 in a 16th century palace in the city centre of Barcelona.

The Modern Contemporary Museum (Moco) is setting up in Barcelona with the same inclusive museum model that already works with great success in Amsterdam. On 16 October 2021, the Moco Museum will open its doors to the public, marking a new chapter for the independent museum and for the city of Barcelona.

Following its first location in Amsterdam, Moco Museum reaffirms its commitment to exhibiting iconic works by internationally renowned and emerging artists. Moco Amsterdam first opened its doors in April 2016. Today, Moco Museum has welcomed close to two million visitors from more than 120 different nationalities. For many visitors, it is an entry point into the art world. The museum is proud to welcome a generally young audience who visit and fall in love with art for the first time.

ON EXHIBITION

At Moco Museum in Barcelona you can find works by Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Banksy, Salvador Dalí, Damien Hirst, Keith Haring, KAWS, Hayden Kays, Yayoi Kusama, David LaChapelle and Takashi Murakami among others, as well as the immersive digital art of teamLab with Les Fantômes and Studio Irma and the space dedicated to the NFT phenomenon.

Special exhibitions – Curated by Simon de Pury, legendary auctioneer, art dealer and one of the art world’s leading figures; Moco Museum will present Guillermo Lorca‘s first European solo show, in which the contemporary Chilean artist combines magic and realism in Esplendor de la Noche.

MOCO MUSEUM BARCELONA

Located at number 25 Carrer Montcada in Barcelona, Moco Museum takes over the space of the Cervelló Palace, a former private residence of the noble Cervelló family until the 17th century. From the Middle Ages until the 20th century, the palace belonged to aristocrats, merchants and the royal family. With the utmost respect for the building, the architect Studio Pulsen recovered the original essence of the Cervelló Palace, adapting it to the needs of the Moco Museum to create a large modern and contemporary space.

The museum’s acquisition of this palace mirrors its first proposal in the Villa Alsberg (1904) in Amsterdam – a historic building reserved for the privileged elite. Once again, Moco Museum changes the atmosphere of an exclusive space to open its doors to the world. The Amsterdam location has outgrown the dreams of the founders and the exhibition space is limited. There is much more art they want to share and many more stories to tell.

IN ART WE TRUST

Moco Museum is a private initiative of Lionel and Kim Logchies. For over twenty years, the artistic couple have been collecting and working side by side, each in their respective fields. Creating Moco Museum has allowed this enterprising duo to come together to showcase wonderful works of art that, were it not for Moco, would have remained in private collections and would not be visible to the general public. Art can change the world, so their intention is to show pieces that create experiences, activate the imagination, challenge norms, broaden perspectives and question the world around us. With an open mind, the museum connects more, building bridges in a world full of polarities.

Now, in one of its favourite cities, Moco Museum Barcelona continues its ambition to welcome an international and diverse audience by inspiring and enriching our world through art.
