GAUCHERE is one of those brands that needs no frills to stand out. Proof of this is its new SS23 collection. Marie-Christine Statz once again proves that the maxim “less is more” works with a collection that focuses on the wearer.
The Passage des Jacobins, a seemingly imperfect and irrelevant place, was the place chosen by the designer to bring her proposal as close as possible to real life and present a collection with a natural attitude, as if the models were simple passers-by.
The house’s founding tailoring continues to remain in the GAUCHERE universe in its SS23. Accentuating a wide shoulder and in lagoon blue, shades of gray and black. Still, the season’s proposal has added light pieces with the use of silk and color accents. In certain pieces, the fabric is twisted and cropped, as for example in dresses and blouses in silk twill with faded multicolored print that is combined with black lace.
And the liberation in fabric continues. Other garments in the collection feature gathered seams that produce bubbles of fabric that look like fluffy clouds. High-waisted pants and skirts are paired with fitted knit tops that form body-hugging silhouettes.
Combined with her minimalism, Marie-Christine Statz has stepped out of her comfort zone by experimenting with certain pieces and their possibilities. Of the 43 looks on the runway, six of them have been crafted in conjunction with artist Camille Henrot. These unique, hand-painted garments were created especially for this season following a creative conversation between her and Marie-Christine Statz.
This breath of fresh air from GAUCHERE SS23, was something we needed and, from what we can see, Marie-Christine Statz also needed. What do you think of this new minimalism?
