Vault by Vans and Joe Freshgoods team up to present ‘Chocolate Valley Resort’, a concept that brings to life a place, at a specific moment in time. The collection of footwear, apparel and accessories is an ode to travel and leisure through the lens of African-American history.
Combining his design prowess, affinity for historical references and personal experience with Midwestern winters, Joe Freshgoods has created a collection of footwear and apparel basics for head-to-toe looks ready for winter and beyond.
Captured by documentary filmmaker Yashaddai Owens featuring Barrington Darius, the lookbook is set in the 1950s and tells the story of a black writer who explores ‘Chocolate Valley Resort’ in search of a place to reboot, relax and reconnect. The collection and lookbook are a tribute to history and black writers such as James Baldwin and Audre Lorde who travelled abroad to escape racism in America and develop their literary careers. The warm and welcoming resort serves as a safe space to foster creativity and community at home.
“Chocolate Valley Resort is inspired by my love of travel and research. For this collection I wanted to create something that aligns with the rich history of Vault by Vans but from a new point of view. In this way, it honours the history of African American travel and leisure with winter-ready pieces that combine fun and functionality,” says Joe Freshgoods Robinson.
The complete unisex range reinvents workwear with modern silhouettes and bright colours, respecting movement and creativity. The Resort Puffer features relaxed sleeves for a laid-back, easy-to-match look. The Chocolate Cardigan is tailored to mimic the texture of mohair, adding jacquard stripes in a mix of almond and coral colours and the iconic JFG embroidery on the sleeve hem.
Fusing quality and simplicity, the Cabin T-shirt offers simple, comfortable comfort in premium distressed white made from 100% cotton. The Resort Uniform Cargo trousers combine structure and fun for a modern workwear look with an adjustable waistband, wide open leg and four cargo pockets. Oversized and made of nylon, the Logo Puffer bag is the perfect tote for travel in any weather. This roomy bag features a top zip and interior pocket to carry everything you need wherever you go. And in keeping with current trends, the Resort Balaclava is all you need for winter, mixing the superpowers of a warm beanie and balaclava.
The Vault by Vans x Joe Freshgoods footwear line reinvents the iconic Sk8-Hi Reissue Platform VLT LX silhouette with a quilted upper to match the collection’s puffer jacket and is available in all of the featured colourways from this collaboration. Both combinations are finished with a platform sole that adds a retro touch to the look.
The Slip-Hiker LX is the other star of the collection, reborn in its more cushioned self. Equipped with an all-weather MTE outsole, it offers maximum grip, a must-have for any hike.
“One of my main goals has always been to use shades of pink in all my collections: it’s the first colour that inspired my design language many years ago. Since the collection is based on cold weather, I wanted to create a full range of items that would work especially in the Midwest winter. That’s why we’ve highlighted the quilted pattern in many of our pieces.”
The Vault by Vans x Joe Freshgoods ‘Chocolate Valley Resort’ collection will be available from 21 January on JoeFreshgoods.com, followed by a 27 January launch on Vans.es and in selected Vault by Vans stores.
