Dirty shoelaces become a belt by Maison Margiela

Galliano again uses imperfection and the worn effect for his new luxury accessory.

Galliano again uses imperfection and the worn effect for his new luxury accessory.

We have seen before this controversial avant-garde aesthetic that uses imperfect and worn elements in haute couture. Some examples are Balenciaga’s Paris Sneaker or Golden Goose, characterized by finding appeal in the ugly and aged.

Maison Margiela has also been capitalizing on this trend with its paint splattered print or worn effect. Creativity knows no limits, and anything can become luxury and haute couture with the right marketing. As John Galliano told Business of Fashion in 2016, “imperfection opens up so many more avenues to travel down.”

The Galliano-designed “Lace Belt” is complete with the Margiela logo and, as indicated on the website, is knotted for adjustability. Its appearance is that of a white cord soiled by use, and near its clasp one can read “MARGIELA” as if written with a faded felt-tip pen.

As always, this aesthetic generates controversial opinions and there will be those who appreciate the new accessory and those who find it ridiculous, or even both at the same time. The belt is available at a price of $180 USD at Maison Margiela for those who love imperfection.
