The news was revealed during the Minecraft Live event, organized by Mojang Studios, the team behind this gaming industry phenomenon. Not only was the exorbitant sales figure shared, but also some new features that are on the way for the game.
Minecraft, which turns 15 next year, has surpassed other industry titans such as Grand Theft Auto V, which has sold more than 185 million copies since its launch in 2013.
Upcoming features players can look forward to include a test camera, which will immerse players in thrilling adventures filled with traps and hostile creatures lurking in a series of rooms and corridors. Mojang Studios CEO Helen Chiang expressed her amazement at Minecraft’s continued success, “As we approach the 15th anniversary, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time, with more than 300 million copies sold. [It’s] a milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all laying our first blocks.”
Minecraft outpaces its closest competition by more than 100 million copies sold, suggesting that its popularity shows no signs of waning anytime soon. In addition, the game will allow players to vote to decide which new creature will be added to the game. Users can immerse themselves in the world of Minecraft in survival mode, challenging their stamina and skills, or unleash their imagination in creative mode, where they can build virtually anything with infinite virtual blocks.
