Mariah Carey faces a $20 million lawsuit over “All I Want for Christmas Is You”

This time, Stone is seeking $20 million in damages, arguing that Carey has copied one of her own songs from 1993 for her iconic Christmas anthem.

Andy Stone, better known as Vince Van and the Valiants, has filed a civil suit against Carey, his co-writer Walter Afanasieff, and Sony Music Entertainment. He alleges “copyright infringement and unjust enrichment” for the song “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which he claims to have co-written in Nashville and released in 1989.

Court documents obtained by PEOPLE reveal that Stone’s song played on the radio in 1993 and became a hit on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart the following year, around the same time the singer’s now-classic Christmas song was released. The lawsuit alleges that Carey copied the “compositional structure” of Stone’s 1989 track. It further argues that Carey and her collaborators “undoubtedly had access” to Stone’s song due to its widespread commercial and cultural success.

In this new lawsuit, Stone’s attorneys accuse Carey of appropriating Stone’s works without a license and telling an “incredible origin story” as if they were his own. The lawsuit concludes that this is “simply a case of actionable infringement.”

So far, Mariah Carey’s legal team has not responded to this new lawsuit. Since the release of her song “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” this version has become a fixture on radio airplay during the holidays and has topped the Billboard Hot 100. In addition, the RIAA has awarded it a Diamond certification, recognizing its more than 10 million copies sold, making it the only Christmas song to achieve this feat. The legal history of this dispute continues, but the Christmas spirit of Mariah Carey’s fans remains unwavering.
